The ARA’s mission is to reduce alcohol-related harm through combating the misuse and abuse of alcohol beverages and promoting only their responsible use.

Participation in public policy development

The ARA has been invited to contribute to various government bodies which deal with alcohol related issues and prevention strategies.

The ARA has close links with local and international organisations which are active in the alcohol-related issues and policy formulation. The ARA is a member of (or has close links with):

  • The International Council of Alcohol and Addictions
  • The Centre for Information on Beverage Alcohol
  • The South African Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse
  • The International Centre on Alcohol Policies
  • The Institute for Health Training and Development

The ARA monitors the legislative process continuously and attempts to ensure that all of the pertinent facts are taken into account by the relevant authorities when legislative changes are considered.

The ARA believes that the South African alcohol beverage industry should be seen as part of the solution to the problem of alcohol abuse and not as part of the problem. The industry can and does make a meaningful contribution to the development of responsible norms and preventive programmes.

In many cases, it has initiated research and prevention in important areas, such as foetal alcohol syndrome, life-skills education and underage consumption. The ARA is always willing to add to its contribution in co-operation with the community and its chosen representatives and other stakeholders sharing common objectives.
