ARA in support of combating alcohol-related harm in Northern Cape
On Wednesday, 11 February, the ARA announced its support of R250 000 to a Crime Prevention Programme in the Northern Cape under the auspices of the provincial Premier.
The programme is aimed at combating social crimes, such as family violence, alcohol abuse and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). “The ARA’s support of this programme showcases that we will continue our efforts to reduce alcohol-related harm through combating the misuse and abuse of alcohol beverages and promoting only their responsible use”, says Adrian Botha, spokesperson for the organization.
“The challenge is to reach the members of the community and to empower them with the necessary skills, information and knowledge effectively to combat crimes that are closely linked to alcohol abuse”, says Judge Steenkamp, chairperson of the crime prevention committee.
This influential team with the assistance of the ARA, have produced material that will be presented at schools, libraries and other public places to educate people about the importance of reporting crimes.
Other activities that the committee will be engaged in include live theatre performances which will confront audiences in a direct and humorous manner. These shows are produced to make its audiences aware of issues like Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and alcohol abuse and will also communicate the necessary steps to take when reporting crime. At least 25 schools in the Northern Cape region will be privy to these performances.
The provincial heads of NGOs, the SANDF, the SAAF, the SAPS, Correctional Services and local business leaders all form part of this committee.
